Treatment & disposal

Different waste streams. The right treatment route for each.

Treatment follows the waste category.

Segregation determines what happens next. Biomedical waste may require thermal destruction, steam treatment or another prescribed route, followed by appropriate recovery or disposal.

Biomedical waste treatment

Different categories require different processes. Treatment must be completed and checked before suitable material moves on to recovery or disposal.

Treatment methods

Incineration

Controlled high-temperature destruction for designated waste categories. Recyclable plastics and sharps follow separate pathways.

Autoclaving

Steam disinfection using controlled temperature, pressure and time, with treatment performance monitored.

Shredding

Size reduction of suitable disinfected waste to prevent reuse. Shredding alone does not disinfect waste.

What happens after treatment?

Material recovery

Appropriately treated recyclable materials go to authorised recyclers or other permitted recovery routes.

Final disposal

Treatment residues and non-recoverable waste require the disposal route applicable to their category.
